frequently asked questions

What should I expect when I come in for my first visit?

For your first visit, we ask that you come 15 minutes early so that you can become familiar with the studio and to complete a registration if you have not done so online.  Rental mats are available, and you may change clothes in our dressing rooms.  While hangers are provided for your clothing items, you may prefer to bring your valuables with you into the classroom.

Are there any special rules of conduct?

To create the best experience for yourself and others, please follow these guidelines:

  •       Remove your shoes at the front door to keep the floors clean for others.

  •       Arrive a few minutes before class begins.  If you arrive just as class is beginning, please enter quietly and find a place in the back of the class. Late arrivals can be disruptive, so please be mindful.

  •       Do not bring cell phones, pagers, or beepers into the studio.  If you are on call or in an emergency situation, please speak to someone at the front desk.

  •       We recommend not eating at least one hour prior to class. Large meals should be given even greater time to settle and digest.  Do drink plenty of water after class.

  •       Refrain from wearing fragrances, as some people are allergic to strong odors.

  •       Tell your teacher about any injuries or special health conditions before class. This will help the teacher make suggestions to make your practice safer and more enjoyable.

  •       Please keep conversations low when you arrive and leave as other students may be relaxing or meditating.

What should I wear?

Yoga is best practiced in comfortable clothing and bare feet.  Shorts, sweats, or fitness clothes are fine.  Baggy tops are not suitable as they may fall down over your head when you are upside down and may inhibit the teacher’s ability to check your alignment.

What else should I bring?

Yoga mat, towel, and water for after the class.

Do you rent mats?

Yes, we do, for a $1 rental fee.   We strongly encourage you to bring your own mat, though, or purchase one at the studio for hygienic reasons.  If you perspire during class, please bring a towel as we do not rent towels.  Please do not use studio blankets without a towel if you are perspiring.

How should I wash my mat?

Follow the directions in this Yoga Journal article.

Do I have to sign up in advance for a class on your schedule?

There is no need to sign up in advance since our classes are filled on a first-come first-served basis.  Please plan to arrive at least five minutes before a class starts (allow more time for your first class).

Why do people practice yoga?

People practice yoga because they want to have better physical, mental, and emotional health.  Many people practice yoga to gain flexibility and strength, develop body awareness, and improve muscle tone and posture.  Yoga is a wonderful way to relieve stress and to achieve inner peace, mental clarity, and emotional balance. Ultimately, yoga is a transformational practice that supports each individual’s journey of growth and change.

Can anyone practice yoga?

Everyone can incorporate some type of yoga into his or her life. If you have serious health problems, consult your health care provider before beginning any exercise program, and tell your yoga teacher about any special problems or conditions.  Please contact us if you have questions about which classes are suitable for you.

What class should I start with?

Start with a beginner class.  Use the first class as a yardstick.  If it's not a good fit for you, mostly likely there will be another class on the schedule that is.  Just ask us if you need direction.  From therapeutic stretching to knee-shaking intense workouts, there's something for everyone on the Highland Yoga schedule.  Restorative classes are appropriate for beginners, but advanced students like them, too.    click here to go to the class schedule, then click each class to read about styles or use the drop-down menu for level groups

When can I move on to a more advanced class?

That depends on the individual.  Some people stay in beginner classes for a very long time, while others wish to jump into more advanced classes prematurely.  Use your judgment.  If a particular pose is too difficult or you are beginning to tire, there's no dishonor in lying in a "Child's Pose" for awhile.

What class would be best for prenatal yoga?

The PreNatal/Women's Health is excellent for expectant moms and the Kripalu Gentle or Beginner classes are well suited for expectant moms.  The Kripalu style is known for its gentle approach, and lends itself well to the special needs of the prenatal student.
