Dharma (Spiritual) Teachings of The Six Paramitas

Venerable Phakyab Rinpoche

Sunday June 10

1-4:00 PM

Admission: $40

Phakyab Rinpoche (pronounced "Pock-chub - Rin-poh-chey") is a ranking lama and a highly renowned practitioner in the Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism.  In 1994, while studying for his Geshe degree (the highest rank in Tibetan Buddhist scholarship), Rinpoche was recognized by the Dalai Lama to be the 8th reincarnation of the Phakyab Rinpoche, a venerated Buddhist teacher and healer.  Subsequent to this recognition, the Dalai Lama requested that Rinpoche return to Tibet to assume leadership of Ashi and Lithang monasteries, the traditional seats of the Phakyab Rinpoche. While in Tibet, Rinpoche taught to wide audiences and became known for his ability to perform Tantric obstacle clearing rituals to assist individuals in their physical, mental and emotional healing.  In 2003, while in Tibet, Rinpoche incurred a life-threatening injury that required him to seek medical attention in the United States. In New York, Rinpoche was advised by three different doctors to have his leg amputated. Refusing the operation, Rinpoche went into retreat and underwent a journey of radical self-healing that has inspired doctors, students, friends and audiences across the county. Key to his healing was Tsa Lung and the Medicine Buddha Practice.

Mothers' Circle Gathering

Anelyn Tortorello

Sundays June 3, 10, 17, 24

10:30 - 12:30

Admission: $65 for all 4 sessions

Since January 2010, more than 30 souls have been born into the Highland Yoga community! This 4-session workshop is open to all mothers including those who have passed through Highland's "Blossoming with Baby Prenatal" Class. A minimum of 6 mothers is required to proceed with this workshop.

In this nurturing setting facilitated by Anelyn, you will have an opportunity for the following:

 Class 1 - 10:30-12:30 PM

  • Share your unique birth story and the (dis)empowerment you encountered - No matter how long women have been bringing people into the world, each story has its own unfolding and each woman faces a moment of challenge prior to tapping into some universal strength
  • Illustrate and journal about your present state in motherhood - What does mothering look like? What does your mothering look like? Through a series of guided questions, you'll have a chance to use different media to explore your creative side.

Class 2 - 10:30-12:30 PM

  • Learn and explore how the first 2 branches of yoga (the Yamas and Niyamas) can be applied to parenting - Yoga comes with its own guidelines for treating others and ourselves. We will discuss these 10 codes of living soulfully and you will become more comfortable with how these may be used in your own situation.
  • Enjoy a yoga class that will bring your energy centers into balance - Through vocal toning, physical practice (asana), breathwork (pranayama) and meditation (dhyana), you will access the 7 major energy centers (chakras) of the body and recognize those that need more (or less!) attention.

 Classes 3 and 4 - 10:30-12:00 PM

  • Bring your little one for mama-and-me yoga time (45 min) - With playfulness and love, share the gift of yoga with your infant/child (even if your child wants to wander off and do something else!).
  • Learn songs and techniques to begin fostering yoga in your little one's life - Using some percussion instruments and our voices, we'll playfully and soulfully connect with our children.

At our final class, we will close our 4-session workshop with tea and fruit!
